I figured since most of you will be doing this at OP: Sunrise I should do a little How-To

I am kidding ofcourse...

However this is a VITAL skill in ANY commander/Squad Leader/Team Elements to be able to properly execute!!

- The Purpose:

To withdraw from overwhelming enemy advance/fire into a safer, more defendable, zone of operations.

- How To Execute:

- Divide your team into 2, maybe 3 depending on size, groups or elements before game-play/scenario. Make sure to assign each element with an even distribution of players(in terms of skill, weaponry, and knowledge).

- Move in a tactical formation until heavy contact is encountered.

- Form a typical reactionary attack formation.

This can be done several ways. The most effective and most practiced method is to form a line or "L" shape to react to the direct threat.

Step 1 - Have one side of the formation Peel back under covering fire from the stationary element. Once UP, you should follow the "UP, THEY SEE ME, DOWN" Technique to minimize exposure. Assume Typical Firing Position.

Step 2 - Once the peeling element has gotten down into a covering position, the once stationary element peels away and moves past the 1st element.

REPEAT steps 1 and 2 until out of direct contact/ambush and reposition men/women accordingly to properly react to the situation.

Pictures Help, so here is a short PAINT explanation:

If I may add a little more to this....

1. Always keep a good spacing between your shooters so they are no elminated in one quick burst.

2. Be aware of your surroundings. If the extra step can get you to cover, use it.

3. Cover versus Concealment. Cover helps you hide from rounds in flight, Concealment helps you hide form the enemy in general.

4. Spacing is key in movement and engagement. If I have to move my eyes or head to see where all of the enemy is, there is a gap in time where I am not watching someone. Exploit this.

5. Simplicity is key. No elaborate plans. Try to flank when you can.

6. Empowerment. Have your element leaders and players able to make decisions and achieve goals without much guidance from command. All I ever ask my team to do is get the goal. How they get it is up to them.

Just some more points.

Also, I think it helps when everybody is independent, that way if they happen to be the last man standing they will know exactly what to do and how to do it without relying on the direction of a "team leader." I've seen a lot of groups get disoriented and confused during prolonged intense games and they lose track of the objective. Good individual tactics as well as teamwork will help keep everybody focused and keep the competetive edge.

i definitely agree to a point. every soldier needs to be able to think for him or herself. and every team member needs to know the mission, as well as a chain of command in their squad, that way if the team leader goes down every one moves up in rank and can function. this can be accomplished simply:

Team leader
Team Sergent
1st element leader
2nd element leader
ect.

spotter (because the spotter should always have more experience)
sniper

independence is good, but teamwork is a must, if some members of the team think the team leader is making bad decision they should not just abandon the team and go do their own thing, on the other hand the team leader should be open to anyone's opinion.

my 2 cents =)

I agree with you on your points Paulsen.

Here is how out team is set up.

Team Captain
XX
Team Lead Team Lead Team Lead
XX XX XX
Team Member Team Member Team Member
Team Member Team Member Team Member

This format lets me use my small elements as individual teams or use two teams together. I empower each of my members to make decisions and question bad choices. When its all over with, Team Captain has the last word.

I also find that keeping the team informed as a whole is key. As you keep your team in teh know, they make better decsions.

I think one of the biggest problems we have with the community is the relation from on-line shooters to war games. People forget that there is no kill counter or score board for them to place on, only how their team ranks at the end of the day. Too many "kill whores" not enough team players. I think if folks could get away from that mindset and into the team work the community would be awesome.

wow perfect example:

Last Saturday my team was tactically owning the other team. at the end of one game there was a single sniper out in the middle of a field with no sidearm. i had gotten most if not all of the kills of that game, i could have gone one-on-one with the sniper and probably killed him to up my ratio, But i decided to use my numbers and tactics to win, i emediatly set down a base of fire on the tree he was behind, and sent two runners to flank and kill him. end result: i didnt risk my life trying to be heroic and we worked as a team.

now granted i could be penned a "kill whore" from my actions the rest of the day, but i had no way to communicate with my team (buy radios!) and ended up having to do most of the flanking and diry work myself.
