什么情況下不使用定冠詞呢？英語中有兩種冠詞：定冠詞和不定冠詞，三種形式：the和a，an。冠詞雖小，但用起來很容易出毛病，因此要特別注意。那么：什么情況下不使用定冠詞呢？
?。?）不要看到most，就以為它前面非得有個the不可，most有別的用法。如：

?。?）序數(shù)詞前要用定冠詞，很多人把這條規(guī)則都記得很牢，但在某些固定的表達方式中出現(xiàn)的序數(shù)詞前面卻是不用the的，如果把它們看成是錯誤，那就上當了。如：
John came out first in the final examination.
You are second to none as far as intelligence is concerned.
?。?）大洋、海、河、山脈前都要求有定冠詞，但洲名前卻不能有定冠詞，如：
the Yangtze River，the Mountain Tai，the Arctic Ocean，the West Lake，North America，Africa
（4）指演奏一種樂器時，樂器前必須要有定冠詞；指進行一種球類活動時，球類前面不可用定冠詞，如：
My younger brother prefers to play the guitar rather than play basketball.
?。?）語言名稱前沒有定冠詞，如：
?。ㄕ`）The Chinese，the most difficult but beautiful language in the world，is my mother tongue.
?。ㄕ〤hinese，the most difficult but beautiful language in the world，is my mother tongue.
但如果在Chinese后面加上language，那么前面就要加定冠詞了，the Chinese指的是全體中國人，如：
All the Chinese love their own language—Chinese most.
類似地，我們說：
Germany，the Germany language（德語），the German（德國人）；
Japan，the Japan language（日語），the Japanese（日本人）；
Korea，the Korea language（韓語），the Korean（韓國人）。
（6）在“……年代”前必須用定冠詞，但在一個具體的年份前絕不能用定冠詞，如：
?。ㄕ`）…people who died in 1860's.
?。ㄕ璸eople who died in the 1860's.
?。ㄕ`）…people who died in the 1860.
（正）…people who died in 1860.
?。?）人名前不可用定冠詞，如，不可說I'd like to invite the Jack Green，應該說I'd like to invite Jack Green。
在人名的所有格前，也不可用定冠詞，如，不可說I believe you are a particular friend of the Pickwick's，只可以說I believe you are a particular friend of Pickwick's。
?。?）定冠詞和指示代詞this，that，these，those在用于特指時，其性質(zhì)、作用是一樣的，因此不能同時使用：
?。ㄕ`）The this man came up to me in the street and started making rude suggestion.
（正）This man came up to me in the street and started making rude suggestion.
